September 15: Coffee Rendezvous

Not only did I have a delightful coffee date with a friend, I ran into two other friends at the coffee shop! I love serendipity (that's the theme of next week's sermon) and it seems to happen to me all the time. Seeing all these friends at Starbucks almost made it feel like life was back to pre-pandemic normal, where you could just stroll around town and see all kinds of people you knew. However, we are definitely still in the midst of the pandemic; we wore masks inside to order, and we sat outside to drink and chat, which felt way more comfortable than sitting inside. I am so thankful they have a decent outdoor seating area. It was delightful to catch up with my friends and have a sociable afternoon, and I hope to have many more in the future.

September 14: Cannabis Trimming

My husband grew a few cannabis plants this year that just exploded with growth and it was time to finally harvest them. I had his cousin come over to give me some pointers, and I spent the whole day outside in the gorgeous late summer/early fall weather (sunny and warm but with a cool breeze) trimming cannabis. While I no longer even use cannabis, it was delightful to be outside working with this plant. It is really a gorgeous living thing, with beautiful crystals on its leaves and buds and perfectly shaped leaves. It is related to the hop plant, and I could totally tell by the way it grows and develops its vines and buds, I've harvested lots of hops in my day and this cannabis plant reminded me a lot of those hop harvests. It was also incredibly rewarding to have the plant go from a mess of vines and leaves to an organized and cleaned up selection of buds. It is currently drying out in our utility closet and the whole house smells of cannabis, which I definitely still enjoy.

September 13: Adult Friends

It is delightful to be able to make new friends as an adult. I am lucky and blessed to have become friends with my fellow alto sax player from the Rockport Legion Band. She is an awesome person and we have incredibly similar interests and motivations, so I was looking forward to being able to spend time with her (and her wife) outside of the musical context. I invited them over for dinner and games on Monday, and we had the best evening. I taught them how to play Puerto Rico, and they were excellent game players. Afterwards, we talked video games for over an hour. I have been concerned about how to make friends as an adult; it was especially hard in my twenties as I had been so used to being able to make friends at school that it was super weird to no longer be in school and I often felt lost as to how to make new friends! But especially now that I feel like I know myself better, it is easier to find friends based on similar interests (music, games, etc). And I 'm delighted that I have been able to find people in my life to surround myself with whom I genuinely enjoy spending time with!

September 12: Terraforming Mars

Right before the pandemic, one of my friends brought over a new board game called Transforming Mars. We learned it and played it once, before the world shut down, and we haven't played it since. At Board Game Night this Sunday, I felt inspired to relearn and replay it, and thankfully two other friends agreed to play with me. It is a delightfully complex game, revolving around terraforming Mars into a planet where humans could actually live, so you do things like create oceans and green spaces and increase oxygen and temperature levels (which totally reminds me of the books I am reading about sentient spiders and octopi on terraformed planets [Children of Time and Children of Ruin]). There are about a million rules, and we did not follow all of them (oops) but we still had a great time playing and I hope to play again soon, so I don't forget all the rules again!

September 11: Food is My Primary Love Language

I had friends over for dinner and games again on Saturday night, and one of them commented about me that "Food is my primary love language" and she was totally right. It delights me to cook and to provide a meal for someone. Not only do I try to do this often for friends and family, it's also what motivates me to volunteer for Meals for Wheels, and what motivated me in the past to start the nonprofit "Groton Community Dinners" and help host meals at churches I've worked for. I once read this great book about this very topic, called "Take This Bread: A Radical Conversion" by Sara Miles. Sara, a lesbian left-wing journalist who was raised an atheist, one day wandered into a church, received communion, and found herself transformed; her new-found faith centered on feeding the hungry and within a few years, she started nearly a dozen food pantries in the poorest parts of her city. She wrote eloquently about how providing food was the ministry she was called to, and I feel very similarly. Not only do you need food to survive, there is something special about sharing a meal with others; it builds community, which arguably you *also* need to survive, or at least to live a more fulfilling life. Even though most of my calling (sharing food, building community, etc) has been limited by the pandemic, I delight even in these small moments in which I can break bread with others...though not literally bread because...keto :)

September 10: A Tapestry of the Periodic Table of Elements

Last year I officiated a wedding for a friend in my backyard. She bought several tapestries to lay out on the grass so people could block off six feet of distance from each other (because...pandemic) and she specifically purchased two for me and my husband, one with staffs of musical notes, the other with the Periodic Table of Elements. They sat in our closet for the longest time, because we were not going out and doing things (because...pandemic). The first time we were able to use one was when we went to Tanglewood; we used it as a ground cover for our sitting area. We chose the Periodic Table of Elements because we were seeing a nerdy news quiz show not a concert. The second time we used it was last night; we attended the Cape Ann Big Band at the "Music on Meetinghouse Green" outdoor concert series. We got there a little late and set up our area toward the back of the lawn. I took out the tapestry (I chose the Periodic Table of Elements because it was readily available since we had just used it) and laid it out on the ground. As I did, a friend came over to say hi. He had seen us come in, but wasn't 100% it was us until we laid out our tapestry, and then he KNEW it was us! HAHAHAHAHA! It was delightful! Of course WE would be the ones with a Periodic Table of Elements tapestry! :) The show was great, the night was cool and breezy, and the evening was perfectly delightful.

September 9: Sermon Writing

I spent the afternoon writing the sermon I will be preaching on September 19 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Gloucester. The only sermons I have written since leaving my last church in 2015 have been wedding sermons, so it has been delightful to get back into this practice again. I am super excited about this particular sermon, which combines three seemingly disparate topics: a 1997 role-playing video game called “Final Fantasy VII”, Disney’s 1989 movie “The Little Mermaid”, and Jesus’ message in Mark 9:30-37 about the last being first. If you’re curious about how I could possibly tie these things together, definitely join us online or in person (I will also post the sermon here on the 19th!). I have very much enjoyed doing the research and pulling together different stories and anecdotes to teach the lesson that sometimes we have to go against the status quo and overturn expectations, no matter how shocking or difficult it may be, in order to do what's right.

September 8: Saxophone Trills

I met again with my new friend/fellow sax player and this time we focused on trills. For the first time ever, I looked at a trill chart, and together we learned all kinds of special buttons and cheats in order to do trills on the saxophone. I used buttons I have never used before on any saxophone, and it was absolutely delightful. It was fun to learn and to teach at the same time, and I feel like such a more accomplished sax player now finally knowing all these trilling secrets!

[The coolest thing was the next night at band practice, we actually got to use one of the best cheats because we had to trill from C (which uses just one finger to play) to D (which uses 7 seven fingers to player). Thanks to the chart, we now know we can just play C like normal and trill one little button on the sax!]

September 7: Intimate Night of Magic

We had just a small group of people attend Magic Pizza Tuesday, but it was delightful to have just one game of magic going (less noise, less chaos, less craziness!), and to have such an intimate evening. We played two 4-player games, both of which were long, involved, and fun. My husband didn't even play because he was out of commission (he got stung several times by honeybees yesterday...long story short, the bottom of the hive fell during my inspection and I needed help reassembling it, the bees were angry and stung my husband 6+ times... today I gave him benedryl to help with the pain, itchiness, and swelling, and it totally knocked him out! The cutest was when he was lying on the couch giggling while watching "Cheers" on Hulu.) I played my Sefris deck and ventured into SO many dungeons, and my dwarf/vehicle deck. Everyone's decks played well together, and we were able to build up quite extensive battlefields, which definitely makes the game much more fun. All in all, a delightful little evening!

September 6: Ikoria Draft

Back in the beginning of the pandemic, a new set of Magic cards came out called Ikoria. We bought a draft booster box in order to draft, but never felt super comfortable having 8 people in the house to do so. The cards just sat on a bookshelf, nearly forgotten, for over a year. We have drafted several other new sets since then, and never could fit this random Ikoria draft into our schedule. But finally, on Labor Day, I was able to gather 8 people to draft this set! Since the cards were over a year old, we decided not to charge money for the draft, and not to play the usual way we do (competition for who has the best record in three brackets of tournament style play).  Instead, we played for achievements and superlatives, which ended up being super fun, though I did horribly! It was delightful to see my friends vying for these particular stats instead of just trying to win the games. After we tallied up the most achievements and superlatives, we did a "final draft" .... of candy! The winner had first pick of a bunch of different candy I had purchased, second place had second pick, etc.

Achievements:

  • Have 30 life
  • Have 10 creatures on battlefield
  • Have 10 lands on battlefield
  • Cast 2 sorceries in one turn
  • Cycle 5 cards
  • Deal 20 damage in one combat
  • Have 10 or fewer cards in library
  • Mutate 5 times
  • Control a creature power 10+

Superlatives:
  • Most life gained in one turn
  • Most creatures on battlefield at one step
  • Most mana created in one phase
  • Most sorceries cast in one game
  • Most cards cycled in one game
  • Most damage dealt in one combat
  • Least number of cards in library at end of one game
  • Highest number mutations in one game
  • Largest Power of creature ever on battlefield

September 5: Three Games in One Night

Board Game Night was delightful this Sunday. I got to play three of my absolute favorite games: Wingspan, Ticket to Ride, and Puerto Rico, and I won two of the three (and the one I lost, Puerto Rico, was won by a friend who had never won it before though he has played many times, so that was delightful too!)! I loved everything about the evening and I am delighted that our regular game nights are going so well, even while still in the midst of a pandemic. It is so important to be able to socialize (especially for my husband who works from home and barely ventures out or sees anyone besides me!) and I very much appreciate the way in which board games help bring people together for a purpose. I'm not much for small talk, so board games gives me an approachable and delightful way to reach out to and to connect with others.

September 4: Sanders' Box

I got a TON of painting accomplished today-- it was delightful to finish the frames of the cupboards, to complete one side of each of the cabinet doors, and to work on the new cabinet my husband built to complete our new kitchen island, but I also finally painted Sanders' Box. Back when my husband was building the very first pieces of the island, Sanders (our youngest ginger cat) started sleeping in one of the toe kicks for the new bookcase. We did not want him to do this, as I was trying to paint them and get them ready for installation, but it was super cute seeing him all squished up and comfy inside of it, so my husband built him his very own box out of some scrap wood. Sanders has loved it and is often found sleeping in it. I kept telling myself I would paint it, and I am so delighted that I FINALLY did. I painted the entire box brown, and I created stencils in order to paint a paw print on both of the short sides, and his name on one of the long sides, in my favorite teal color (leftover paint from our staircase project). It looks fantastic, and I can't wait to finish polyurethaning it so he can sleep in it once more!

September 3: A Fall Drive

I had to drive to Ipswich today to pick up three more packs of Magic cards from the Ikoria set in order to draft on Labor Day, and it was a delightful afternoon to take a drive! The temperature was perfect, in the 70s, nice cool breeze, bright and sunny, and this delightful smell of fall in the air. Days like this always boost my mood and remind me other delightful fall days in my past. I am continuingly amazed by the way in which smells and certain feelings that transport you back in time to very specific moments and memories. The particular smells and feelings I had today reminded me of a day 12 years ago, I had just broken up with my long term live-in boyfriend, and was out and about visiting yard sales to purchase items for my new apartment. I remember feeling independent and alive and hopeful, with the same crisp fall air rushing through the windows of my car. As painful as that time in my life was, this particular moment was filled with such possibility that it made everything okay. And that is delightful.

September 2: Six New Songs

We had Reset Button band practice last night and I brought six new songs that I arranged for the band to try. It is delightful to hear real live actual musicians play your songs. I arranged a Scooby Doo Medley (theme songs from the 1969 and 1970 cartoons and What's New Scooby Doo from 2002), "More than a Feeling" by Boston, two Undertale [video game] songs (Megalovania and Heartache), Dr. Wily's Castle from Megaman [video game], and the theme song to the Pokémon cartoon "Gotta Catch Em All!" They all went very well, though some are admittedly much harder to play than others. I really love arranging songs for our little group, and I look forward to tweaking them, practicing them, and performing them!

September 1: Eight Year Anniversary

Today marked 8 years being married to my amazing husband (just over 9 years knowing each other). We celebrated by going out to dinner at one of our favorite restaurants (The Boathouse). I love us for SO many reasons, one of which is the fact that we play games while we are out to eat :) This time, we played one of our old favorites, "The Castle", which is basically a two person version of Carcassonne. The whole evening was delightful; we had a delicious meal, a super kind server (whom we tipped very well 😇), and we even each had a drink! (And I won the game, hehehe). I love every moment we spend together, and I continue to be forever grateful that he came into my life. Here's to 8 (+8 +8 +8 +8) more!

31 Delights in August!

August has come and gone in what seems like the blink of an eye! This summer has been busier than I had imagined (especially considering I am still not working [for money, that is]). In addition to all the bands and volunteering, I have tried to enjoy the warm weather by reading outside in the mornings, instead of sitting here at the computer (I know, excuses, excuses!)! But I do not want to neglect this  year of delight project, and I am still constantly thinking about delightful moments in my days, so here are 31 things I delighted in this month (mostly in chronological-ish particular order). I plan to get back to posting daily starting in this new month of September, and hope to blog regularly until the end of the year. Let's see if I can do it!

1. Camping! My husband and I went on our yearly camping trip August 1-8, and the whole week was absolutely delightful. Every year, his (my/our!) whole family books sites on Horse Island at Pawtuckaway State Park in New Hampshire and this year did not disappoint.

2. Lego practical joke. During camp, we went to Walmart and bought a Lego set to make a camper. After building it, we went around to every family camp site to share the "big news" that we "bought a camper". Everyone fell for it, and everyone was shocked when we revealed a Lego camper. It was THE best! hahahaha.

3. Tripod the Three Legged Squirrel. Last year at camp, we befriended a three legged squirrel whom we affectionately named Tripod. This year, we could NOT believe it when we spotted her! She seems to be doing very well, and looks way better and healthier than last year!

4. Helena, the Three Amigos, and Broken. We were visited by a bunch of ducks during our week at camp. "The Three Amigos" may have been the same reluctant mom and babies we saw last year. Broken was a male duck who did not appear to be very healthy, and Helena was a loner who hung out with us a lot. They were super cute and delightful.

5. Dutch Blitz. During camp, one of my nieces introduced me to a new card game called "Dutch Blitz", which was super fun, and goes super fast, and she won every game we played!

6. SushiGo! I brought SushiGo and learned it/taught it to one of my younger nieces, and we had a delightful time together. It was lovely to spend some quality time alone with her, and I was impressed by how quickly she picked up the game!

7. Fire Tower. We hiked to the Fire Tower at Pawtuckaway, which gave us some amazing views of the area. This year, we discovered a great shortcut to get to the trail, by driving all the way around the mountain and parking at a totally new area, which made the trail SO much easier to hike!

8. Kayaking. We took a long water craft adventure, me on my kayak, my husband with his SUP, and it was super fun. I even spotted a Kingfisher dive into the water and catch a fish!

9. P-TUCK BINGO. To sum up the rest of my camping experience without taking up all 31 spots here, I will mention my P-TUCK (Pawtuckaway) BINGO that I play every year. I create a board with a list of wildlife I hope to see and then check them off throughout the week. The best is shouting BINGO! randomly while out and about when I spot something new. I saw tons of wildlife this year including a: bat, hawk, woodpecker, heron (who also caught a fish right in front of me), chipmunk, turkey (with babies!), toad, frog, oriole, chicadee, nuthatch, loon, and so much more, all of which were amazingly delightful.

10. Maria's Pizza. Our regular Magic Pizza Tuesday Pizza place was closed for their yearly week-long vacation, so we had to go to a different pizza place on Tuesday this month. We chose Maria's, which even *I* love, even though I'm totally not supposed to eat pizza. For future reference, 5 pizzas would work perfectly for ~10 pizza eaters, but buying 6 gave my husband lunch for several days.

11. Cape Ann Pizza. I should mention our regular Magic Pizza Tuesday pizza place. I delight in being a regular there, and I especially love the "Christos Bowl" that they make me each week, a delicious keto meal in a bowl with spinach, chicken, bacon, and feta.

12. Ocean Rocks. I went on a Monday walk with my walking buddy to Stage Fort Park/Boulevard specifically to collect ocean rocks; I loved being able to look at the rocky beach in a speculative light, searching for the perfect rocks.

13. Reset Button at Cape Ann Lanes. We had a lovely first gig of 2021, with some diehard video game fans in the audience who recognized and appreciated our geeky video game music. It was also super cool to play music with the sounds of a bowling alley in the background!

14. The Runaround at Cape Ann Lanes. The following week, I got to be in the audience of a gig at the bowling alley. It was fun to be able to play arcade games while listening to great ska music.

15. Impromptu Walk & Klezmer Band. On a random Friday this month, my husband and I took a delightful walk down the Boulevard, got frozen yogurt from Cafe Bischo, and walked in the direction of the UU church, where we could hear live music; we just happened upon an amazing little Klezmer group called "Ezekiel's Wheels" (with a female bassist!) playing during the "Music on Meetinghouse Green" outdoor concert series, and stayed awhile to listen and to eat our dessert.

16.  Hop Tea. I have become obsessed with Hop Tea made by HopLark in Colorado. My favorite is a white tea with tropical fruit flavors from the hops. It is lightly carbonated, lightly caffeinated, and allows me to drink a fun treat instead of alcohol!

17. Over the Rainbow. I played a solo with the Rockport Legion Band for "Over the Rainbow". I was very happy with my performance, and I was told the sky behind the gazebo where we were performing showed an absolutely delightful sunset on the ocean during it!

18. Invitation to Preach. During that concert, I was introduced to the audience with a short bio, including the fact that I am ordained minister and went to Harvard Divinity School. After the concert, I was approached by one of the French Horn players who didn't know I was a minister until that moment, and invited me to preach at her church in September, which I excitedly accepted. Come hear me at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lanesville on both Sept. 19 and 26!

19. The Little Mermaid. I started listening to a new podcast called "Revisionist History" with Malcolm Gladwell, and one of my favorite episodes so far is actually a three part series about the Little Mermaid. It focused on "fixing" the problematic plot (if you don't already know, most of Disney's films are highly problematic) and I LOVED the new ending they gave it, so much so that I plan to use bits of it for one of my sermons next month!

20. Getting paid to play video games?! I started planning one of my sermons for September by reading the scriptures assigned for that week and reading/listening to other people's sermons on them. I was inspired by a Brian McLaren sermon on Mark 9:30-37 where he uses an escalator analogy.... explaining that humanity is often riding the escalator "up" while Jesus is riding it "down". The disciples (and us for the most part) were intent on climbing the ladder of success while Jesus was more determined to descend the ladder of service. Jesus was constantly turning people's expectations upside down. ("The least will be greatest."). One of the things Jesus turned upside down was the traditional view of the hero-- who "fights" violently, "wins" the battle, and never dies; Jesus instead picked the way of peace, not war, and he died in the end... a shocking turn of events for a "hero". This reminded me of the shocking death of one of the main characters in the video game "Final Fantasy VII", so that's how I'm going to start my sermon. I started to replay FFVII in order to remind myself of this tragic death, and I commented to my husband that it was the first time I've ever played a video game in order to prepare for a sermon. My husband commented that it was the closest I'd get to being paid for playing a video game! haha!

21. Jonathan Van Ness. My husband downloaded a podcast episode for me to listen to that was absolutely delightful. It was an interview with Jonathan Van Ness (of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy") on "It's Been a Minute with Sam Sanders". I learned so much about JVN and his life and struggles as a gay man living with HIV and I thought Sam did a superb job with the interview.

22. Concert at Stage Fort Park. The Cape Ann Community Band had a delightful concert at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester. I was very happy with my/our performance, and excited that our family was so well represented! (My husband, niece, and I all played, and two of my other nieces marched around during the kids' march!)

23. Mii Theme. I hung out with the 2nd Alto Sax player from the Rockport band to give her some pointers on playing sax (she used to be a trumpet player and taught herself to play sax last year!) One of the things I brought with me was the Nintendo Mii Theme as a duet for alto sax. We worked on it a bit, and it sounded AMAZING! It was also just super fun to hang out with her; she and I are kindred spirits, in love with board games, video games, and music!

24. Wait Wait Don't Tell Me at Tanglewood. Every year for several years (except last year because of the pandemic), we travel to Tanglewood in Western Mass to see a concert or radio show taping, or sometimes both. This year, we saw "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" the NPR news quiz, and it was absolutely delightful. The BEST part of the show will probably never be aired. At the end of the show, the three comedian panelists (Maz, Paula, and Josh) go through a lightning round of questions about the week's news. Paula made some funny claims about the contest being rigged, and argued that Josh was getting special treatment from the host Peter Segal, especially after Josh did amazingly well on his questions, and Paula did not. But after the scores were announced, with Josh being declared the winner, Paula made a little speech, saying something like "I want to set an example. I admit that the contest was not rigged, and I accept defeat." (basically pointing fun at Trump and his ridiculous claims that he won the 2020 election because it was rigged). The crowd erupted in cheers; it was absolutely amazing.

25. Wandering Star Brewery. Every year we go to Tanglewood, we try to stop at Wandering Star Brewery in Pittsfield. They weren't going to be open during the time we would be there, but I sent them a facebook message to see if they would be able to open just for us to visit, do a tasting, and buy some beer, and they said yes! We had a delightful time there, as always, especially with Fuggle the brewery cat.

26. Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. We took a hike during our visit to Tanglewood and it was delightful. We followed a bunch of trails along beaver dams, and accidentally took a wrong turn onto a closed trail (closed because of the hurricane henri damage, which thankfully wasn't actually that bad).

27. Pumpkins?!? My husband used a bunch of our compost in the greenhouse for our plants, and apparently some pumpkin seeds from the compost took root and developed into amazing plants. For the longest time, he thought they were spaghetti squash plants, but once the fruit started to develop, he figured out they were pumpkins! We will get a least a few from this accidental planting!

28. "Café Nerd". Every time I go to Whole Foods in Beverly, I stop at the next door Café Nero to get coffee. My husband once accidentally called it "Café Nerd" , because he read the name wrong on the cup, and now that's what I always call it. Their espresso is delicious, AND they have sugar free caramel syrup!

29. Blues Brothers. I played Bari Sax during the Aug. 29 Rockport Legion Band concert, and had an AMAZING part in the Blues Brothers medley we played, and I NAILED it. It sounded super awesome, and I was excited to play bari sax finally in this band!

30. Pink Panther. Another awesome bari part I had in the concert was the Pink Panther/Baby Elephant Walk/Moon River medley. I nailed it too! ♪♫♪

31. Mosquito Net Hat. After my frustration with the bugs on our recent hikes, I bought a mosquito net hat from Amazon and immediately wore it during a little evening hike in our Mt. Ann neighborhood. Seems to work! I had NO bugs flying in my face, up my nose, in my mouth, or around my ears! SUCH a drastic improvement!!

With a month's worth of delight,

♥Jamie
