September 9: Sermon Writing

I spent the afternoon writing the sermon I will be preaching on September 19 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Gloucester. The only sermons I have written since leaving my last church in 2015 have been wedding sermons, so it has been delightful to get back into this practice again. I am super excited about this particular sermon, which combines three seemingly disparate topics: a 1997 role-playing video game called “Final Fantasy VII”, Disney’s 1989 movie “The Little Mermaid”, and Jesus’ message in Mark 9:30-37 about the last being first. I have very much enjoyed doing the research and pulling together different stories and anecdotes to teach the lesson that sometimes we have to go against the status quo and overturn expectations, no matter how shocking or difficult it may be, in order to do what's right.
