September 6: Ikoria Draft

Back in the beginning of the pandemic, a new set of Magic cards came out called Ikoria. We bought a draft booster box in order to draft, but never felt super comfortable having 8 people in the house to do so. The cards just sat on a bookshelf, nearly forgotten, for over a year. We have drafted several other new sets since then, and never could fit this random Ikoria draft into our schedule. But finally, on Labor Day, I was able to gather 8 people to draft this set! Since the cards were over a year old, we decided not to charge money for the draft, and not to play the usual way we do (competition for who has the best record in three brackets of tournament style play).  Instead, we played for achievements and superlatives, which ended up being super fun, though I did horribly! It was delightful to see my friends vying for these particular stats instead of just trying to win the games. After we tallied up the most achievements and superlatives, we did a "final draft" .... of candy! The winner had first pick of a bunch of different candy I had purchased, second place had second pick, etc.

Achievements:

  • Have 30 life
  • Have 10 creatures on battlefield
  • Have 10 lands on battlefield
  • Cast 2 sorceries in one turn
  • Cycle 5 cards
  • Deal 20 damage in one combat
  • Have 10 or fewer cards in library
  • Mutate 5 times
  • Control a creature power 10+

Superlatives:
  • Most life gained in one turn
  • Most creatures on battlefield at one step
  • Most mana created in one phase
  • Most sorceries cast in one game
  • Most cards cycled in one game
  • Most damage dealt in one combat
  • Least number of cards in library at end of one game
  • Highest number mutations in one game
  • Largest Power of creature ever on battlefield

With delight,
♥Jamie
